“2/12/26 I met John and his wife at church. When I saw their commitment to the youth, I asked John if he would be willing to assist with the church's safety group. He agreed to participate, even while he and his wife assumed leadership roles with the youth. When John was being considered for the position of Church Elder, one of Elders asked me if I trusted John. My answer then and now is "Yes, with my life". John is a veteran law officer, with a high level of leadership and management experience. He will be an excellent sheriff for the all citizens of Klickitat County.” Paul S.

For more than twenty years, I had the privilege of serving alongside John as he rose through the ranks in the 2 departments we worked for over 25 years — from Detective to Sergeant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and ultimately Chief of Police. At every level, he proved himself to be a decisive leader, a person of unquestioned integrity, and someone who could be trusted with the most difficult operational and personnel challenges. When I was promoted into City administration, there was no doubt in my mind who should lead the department — John was the clear choice because he had already earned the confidence of our officers, city leadership, and the community. 7/17/26 I am pleased to offer my strong support for John Bruce as the next Sheriff of Klickitat County.
As the former Chief of Police for the City of Goldendale, I understand the leadership, integrity, and experience required to effectively lead a law enforcement agency. During my career, I have had the opportunity to work with and observe many law enforcement professionals, and I believe John Bruce possesses the qualities necessary to successfully serve the citizens of Klickitat County.
John brings more than 35 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as Chief of Police for both Richland, Washington, and Frisco, Texas. He has spent more than two decades in executive leadership positions and currently serves as a Team Leader/Assessor with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). His background demonstrates a commitment to professional standards, organizational excellence, and continuous improvement.
Throughout his career, John has earned a reputation for honesty, professionalism, and ethical leadership. He understands the importance of accountability, transparency, and building strong relationships with the communities law enforcement serves. His experience leading large organizations, mentoring employees, and implementing best practices has prepared him well to lead the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office.
I believe John has the vision, leadership, and executive experience needed to move the Sheriff's Office forward while supporting its employees and maintaining the trust and confidence of the public. He is committed to public safety and dedicated to providing professional law enforcement services to the residents, businesses, and visitors of Klickitat County.
